Magnificent Medvedev beats Cobolli to reach US Open fourth round
Daniil Medvedev defeated Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in third round on Saturday. He will face Portuguese Nuno Borges next
Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed, won against Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 31 seed, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to move into the last 16 of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Saturday.
Medvedev, ranked No 5, will play Portuguese Nuno Borges next. He is notably the only former champion surviving in the men’s singles draw with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz facing upset losses in the third round and second round, respectively.
Medvedev, however, gained confidence with a straight-set win on Saturday.
“To me, upsets don’t really matter,” he said in his on-court interview. “The conditions are a bit tricky. The favourites maybe have less margin against the other guys. Just have to be more cautious. If I play good tennis I can win the whole thing. If I don’t play good I can lose against anyone. I just have to play my best and try to win.”
The Russian beat Serb Dusan Lajovic (6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1) and Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (5)) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Cobolli, ranked No 31, edged out Australian James Duckworth (6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4) and won against Belgian Zizou Bergs (4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3).
