US Open: McDonald upsets No 15 seed Auger-Aliassime

American Mackenzie McDonald edged out Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 15 seed, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Monday night.

Despite Auger-Aliassime being the No 15 seed at the US Open, this result almost felt like an inevitability. The Canadian has not been himself over recent month since returning from injury, going 3-10 in his last 13 matches ahead of this week. McDonald, on the other hand, has been a consistent giant-killer, taking two top 10 scalps in the past fortnight, and double that this year.

McDonald simply played the cleaner tennis across the course of the three hours, 27 minutes that the pair spent on Court 5, the site of Holger Rune’s upset earlier today. With far few unforced errors and a much better break point conversion, this match was always heading the American’s way.

Auger-Aliassime did provide his fans with a brief glimmer of hope, however, going up 0-40 on McDonald’s serve at 4-5 in the fourth. Just when it looked like the No 15 seed would break back and potentially force a deciding set, he sprayed error after error to concede the match.
