US Open: Kyrgios wins in four; to meet Wolf in third round
Nick Kyrgios edged out Benjamin Bonzi 7-6 (3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 on Wednesday to reach the third round for the fifth time in his career
Australian Nick Kyrgios, the No 23 seed, needed four sets to defeat Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi and reach the third round of the US Open in New York City on Wednesday.
The Wimbledon runner-up dropped the third set but regrouped to win 7-6 (3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 57 minutes.
Kyrgios slammed 30 aces during the match and saved nine of 12 break points on his serve. He was also able to break Bonzi’s serve four times of eight chances to help him score the win.
The Australian, ranked No 25, will now play American wildcard J.J. Wolf next for a spot in the last 16. Kyrgios is now through to the round of 32 for the fifth time in his career at the US Open and will be looking to reach the last 16 for the first time.
In the previous round of Flushing Meadows, Kyrgios had defeated close friend and doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis (6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4)).
