US Open: Kokkinakis upsets Tsitsipas in four sets, moves into second round
Thanasi Kokkinakis edged out Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Tuesday. He’ll face the winner of the match between Portuguese Nuno Borges and Argentinian Federico Coria in the next round
Thanasi Kokkinakis moved into the second round of the US Open by scoring a stunning upset vs the world No 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Tuesday. The Australian put on a stunning display of aggressive tennis, launching down 47 winners and winning 78% of points from his rocket first serve against the former world No 3.
The win represents one of the biggest victories of the Australian’s career, and marks a continuation of Tsitsipas’s disappointing performances in New York. The Greek’s best performance at the event was in 2021, when he made the third round, but has only collected one win in the last three editions.
Speaking after the victory, Kokkinakis said:
“Hell of a player. I had a 5 set battle with him a couple years ago at the Australian Open. I was expecting a war. It was physical out there. I have a tendency to sometimes drag these matches on. I tried to stay focus and stay the course. I tried to play every point. I had a lot of tight losses when I’ve been in winning positions. That was just all relief and mental I would say. I’m super excited.”
I’m super excited
Kokkinakis, ranked No 86 in the world, will face the winner of the match between Portuguese Nuno Borges and Argentinian Federico Coria next and the Australian will like his chances to take advantage of the upset victory. The open draw, after Felix Auger-Aliassime‘s loss to Jakub Mensik (6-2 6-4 6-2) earlier today, was also noted by Nick Kyrgios.
