US Open: Keys reaches last eight, knocks out Pegula

No 17 seed Madison Keys won against No 3 seed Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the last eight of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Monday evening.

Keys, ranked No 17, will face No 9 seed Marketa Vondrousova next.

Pegula was looking to equal her best-ever Slam result by reaching the quarter-final, while Keys was through to her first round of 16 at the US Open since 2019.

Both also had impressive records against compatriots this year – Keys now at 7-2, while Pegula’s has narrowed to 5-3.

Earlier in the tournament, Madison Keys defeated Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus (6-2, 6-4), Belgian lucky loser Yanina Wickmayer (6-1, 6-2) and Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 14 seed (5-7, 6-2, 6-2).

Pegula, ranked No 3, won against Italian Camila Giorgi (6-2, 6-2), Romanian Patricia Maria Tig (6-3, 6-1) and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 26 seed (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Flushing Meadow tournament.
