US Open: Keys reaches last 16, to face Pegula in all-American clash
Madison Keys beat Liudmila Samsonova 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday. She’ll face fellow American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed, in the next round
American Madison Keys, the No 17 seed, reached the last 16 of the US Open by winning against Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 14 seed, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Saturday.
Keys, ranked No 17, will play fellow American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed, next.
“Jessica (Pegula) probably plays a little bit flatter than I do. But I think maybe if I have the advantage on the serve, she has the advantage on the return,” Keys said looking forward to her next match. “I think we kind of are opposites a little bit. But, she’s been playing some amazing tennis the past few years. “
Ahead of her victory, the American defeated Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus (6-2, 6-4) and Belgian lucky loser Yanina Wickmayer (6-1, 6-2).
Samsonova, ranked No 15, beat American Claire Liu (7-6 (3), 6-3) and German Tamara Korpatsch (6-3, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Flushing Meadows tournament.
