US Open: Keys moves into third round after a big battle against Giorgi
Madison Keys edged out Camila Giorgi 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (6) on Wednesday. She’ll face the winner of the match between Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse and American Coco Gauff, the No 12 seed, in the next round
American Madison Keys, the No 20 seed, moved into the third round of the US Open by edging out Italian Camila Giorgi 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (6) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Wednesday.
The third set was like a roller coaster, Giorgi leading 5-2 and serving for the match at 5-3. Keys finally won the match at the super tie-break. “I felt like the momentum had kind of swung back to my side once we got to the match tiebreak”, she said. “To get off to an early lead, have a little bit of breathing room, felt pretty good.” She lead 4-0, then 7-3 to finally win 10-6.
Keys, ranked No 20, will face the winner of the match between Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse and American Coco Gauff, the No 12 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Flushing Meadows, the American won against Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (7-6 (3), 6-3).
Giorgi, ranked No 67, defeated Hungarian Anna Bondar (4-6, 6-3, 6-1) in the previous round of the Flushing Meadows.
