Jabeur wins to set up US Open quarter-final clash against Tomljanovic
Ons Jabeur beat Veronika Kudermetova 7-6 (1), 6-4 in straight sets to reach the US Open quarter-finals for the first time in her career
Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, the No 5 seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time in her career, after defeating 18th seed Veronika Kudermetova, of Russia, in straight sets on Sunday night.
Jabeur, who reached her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in July, scored a 7-6 (1), 6-4 win in one hour and 33 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Ahead of her victory, the Tunisian won against American Madison Brengle (7-5, 6-2), American wildcard Elizabeth Mandlik (7-5, 6-2) and American Shelby Rogers, the No 31 seed (4-6, 6-4, 6-3).
Jabeur holds a 2-0 edge over Tomljanovic in head-to-head
Ranked No 5 in the world, 28-year-old Jabeur will meet 29-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarter-finals. The Tunisian holds a 2-0 lead in their career head-to-head, including a straight sets win in the third round of Rome earlier this year.
The first meeting came a decade aga in the quaretr-finals of the WTA Casablanca event which Jabuer won in three sets.
