US Open: Gauff scores another bagel on way to third round, faces Svitolina next
Coco Gauff beat Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-0 on Wednesday night and will play No 27 seed Elina Svitolina in the next round
American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, won against German Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-0 to reach the third round of the US Open in New York on Wednesday night.
The win means defending champion Gauff has now won nine matches in a row at the US Open, with her last two ending in second-set bagels.
“Last week I felt more pressure,” shared Gauff after the match. “Stepping on the court now I have really nothing to lose.
“I’m 20 years old. I have one under my belt. I have the potential to do more whether it happens this year or in the future.”
Gauff, ranked No 3, will play the winner of the match between No 27 seed Elina Svitolina and Anhelina Kalinina next.
The 20-year-old American defeated Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva (6-2, 6-0) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Maria, ranked No 99, beat Argentinian qualifier Solana Sierra (6-2, 6-3).
