US Open: Gasquet reaches third round for the ninth time

French veteran Richard Gasquet reached the third round of the US Open by edging out Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, the No 32 seed, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Thursday night.

This was the second consecutive four-set win for Gasquet, who hit 61 winners during the two hour and 48 minute contest. He has defeated Japanese Taro Daniel (6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-2) in the opening round at Flushing Meadows.

This is the ninth time in his career that the 36-year-old former top 10 player has reached the round of 32 at Flushing Meadows with his best performance coming in 2013 when he reached the semi-finals.

Gasquet, ranked No 91, will face the winner of the match between Italian Fabio Fognini and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the second seed, next.
