US Open: Fucsovics outlasts Korda in five-setter, faces Hijikata next

Hungarian Marton Fucsovics reached the second round of the US Open by beating American Sebastian Korda, the No 31 seed, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Monday evening.

It was a result that almost seemed scripted. Korda has a poor first-round record in 2023, sitting at 5-6 in opening matches ahead of the US Open. Fucsovics, on the other hand, is overpowered in Grand Slams, regularly punching above his weight and known for being one of the fittest players on Tour, and hardest to put away in best-of-five.

No surprises then that this one went the distance, with Fucsovics having more in the tank after four hours, 26 minutes. The tennis wasn’t pretty at times, with 65 unforced errors from the Hungarian and 73 from the American. While Korda crushed 47 winners, ultimately Fucsovics fitness and ability to capitalise on break points got the world No 57 across the line.

Fucsovics will face Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata in the second round on Wednesday.
