Alert – Fritz beats Zverev to reach US Open semi-final
Taylor Fritz edged out Alexander Zverev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Tuesday evening and will face the winner of the match between Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 9 seed, and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 20 seed, in the next round
American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the US Open by edging out German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Tuesday evening.
Fritz, ranked No 12, will play the winner of the match between Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 9 seed, and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 20 seed, next.
The American defeated Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli (7-5, 6-1, 6-2), Italian Matteo Berrettini (6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-1), Argentinian Francisco Comesana (6-3, 6-4, 6-2) and Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 8 seed (3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the US Open.
Earlier in the tournament, Zverev, ranked No 4, won against lucky loser Maximilian Marterer (6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2), French wildcard Alexandre Muller (6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1), Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-3) and American Brandon Nakashima (3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2).
