Brilliant Fritz upsets Ruud to return to US Open quarter-finals
The American won against Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday evening and will play German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, in the next round
American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed, won against Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 8 seed, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to move into the quarter-finals of the US Open in New York on Sunday evening.
Fritz put on a serving masterclass against Ruud, rocketing down an impressive 24 aces and winning 84 percent of first serve points across the course of the two-hour, 43-minute match. He also played brilliantly off the ground, out-hitting Ruud 56 winners to 32 as the American returns to the US Open quarter-finals for the second year in a row.
Fritz, ranked No 12, will play German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, next.
The American defeated Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli (7-5, 6-1, 6-2), Italian Matteo Berrettini (6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-1) and Argentinian Francisco Comesana (6-3, 6-4, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Ruud, ranked No 8, beat Chinese qualifier Yunchaokete Bu (7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-2), Frenchman Gael Monfils (6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (3)) and Chinese Juncheng Shang (6-7 (1), 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1).
