Alert: Fritz comes back to beat Tiafoe in US Open semi-finals
Taylor Fritz won an all-American showdown against Frances Tiafoe on Friday night at the US Open. It was a thrilling semi-final that sends Fritz into the title match against Jannik Sinner.
Taylor Fritz reached the final of the US Open by defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Friday night.
Fritz, ranked No 12, will battle Italian Jannik Sinner for the title on Sunday.
On his way to the final, Fritz also knocked off Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli (7-5, 6-1, 6-2), Italian Matteo Berrettini (6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-1), Argentinian Francisco Comesana (6-3, 6-4, 6-2), Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 8 seed (3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2) and German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed (7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3)).
Tiafoe, ranked No 20, made his second US Open semi-final run at the expense of Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5), Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko (6-4, 6-1, 1-0 ret.), No 13 seed Ben Shelton (4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3), Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 28 seed (6-4, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3) and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 9 seed (6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1 ret.).
