US Open: Top American Fritz makes amends for 2022, blasts through first round match

No 9 seed Taylor Fritz beat wildcard Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 to reach the second round of the US Open men’s singles event at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Monday afternoon.

This time last year, Taylor Fritz faced off against a lower-ranked compatriot in Brandon Holt, who sent him crashing out of the US Open in the first round. There was to be no repeat experience this year, however, as Fritz put on a clinical display, bettering Johnson in almost every department to win in one hour, 20 minutes.

Taylor “The Hotshot” Fritz, ranked No 9, will face the winner of the match between Serb Miomir Kecmanovic and Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas next.
