Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, the No 14 seed, defeated Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Tuesday night.
Fernandez, who lost in last year’s final to Emma Raducanu, is playing only her third tournament since the French Open due to a foot injury.
She improved to 2-2 since then with today’s win and next faces the red-hot Russian Liudmila Samsonova.
Samsonova won her 11th match in a row on Monday scoring a straight sets win over Czech teen Sara Bejlek.
