Dialled-in Diallo upsets Fils at US Open, faces Paul next

Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo edged out Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 24 seed, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4 to move into the third round of the US Open in New York on Thursday evening.

The win sees Diallo through to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time, with the 22-year-old having never won a main draw match at a major previously. He is now the last Canadian remaining at the US Open.

Diallo, ranked No 143, will play American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the 22-year-old Canadian edged out Spaniard Jaume Munar (6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5).

Fils, ranked No 24, won against American wildcard Learner Tien (6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2) in the previous round of the US Open.
