US Open: De Minaur first man to move into third round
Alex De Minaur beat Cristian Garin 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 on Wednesday. He’ll face the winner of the match between Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, the No 12 seed, and Kazakh Alexander Bublik in the next round
Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 18 seed, reached the third round of the US Open by defeating Chilean Cristian Garin 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Wednesday.
That was a replay of 2022 Wimbledon round of 16 match, won by Garin.
“Another very solid performance”, De Minaur said after the match. “I’m very happy with my level, but more than my level on court, I’m probably the happiest with how I was mentally. That, for me, was very important coming into the match and how I dealt with the circumstances.”
I easily could have started thinking about what happened in Wimby

“I was able to bounce back and not let it affect me when I lost the third set”, De Minaur continued. “Because I easily could have started thinking about what happened in Wimby, being two sets to love up and kind of letting that one escape away from me. But I kind of knuckled down, stuck to my weapons and my tactics and what I wanted to do. I was able to go on top on the third and play some great tennis to finish it off.”
De Minaur, ranked No 20, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, the No 12 seed, and Kazakh Alexander Bublik next.
In the previous round of the Flushing Meadows, the Australian won against Serb Filip Krajinovic (7-5, 6-2, 6-3). Garin, ranked No 82, won against Czech Jiri Lehecka (3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5, 6-1) in the first round of the Flushing Meadows.
