Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 10 seed, won against Dan Evans 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-0 in the third round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Saturday.

Evans proved a tough opposition for De Minaur to begin with as the Brit offered stern resistance in the opening set before claiming the second in a tiebreaker.

However, Evans suffered an unfortunate injury that derailed him completely at the start of the third set. De Minaur then showed no mercy to his opponent, who decided to not quit, and dished out back to back bagels in less than 40 minutes.

The world No 10 unlocked a new achievement with the result as he became the first Aussie to reach fourth round of all four Grand Slams in calendar year since 2004 when former world No 1 Lleyton Hewitt did the same.

De Minaur, ranked No 10, will play compatriot Jordan Thompson next.

In the previous rounds of the US Open, the Australian edged out American Marcos Giron (6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4) and beat Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen (7-5, 6-1, 7-6 (3)).

Evans, ranked No 184, defeated Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 23 seed (6-7 (6), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4) and Argentinian Mariano Navone (6-4, 6-3, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
