US Open: Davidovich Fokina wins to set up Galan clash in third round
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina needed five sets to beat Marton Fucsovics 7-6 (3), 5-7, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (3) and reach the third round of the US Open for the second time in his career
Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to the third round of the US Open by beating Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in five sets at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Wednesday evening.
Davidovich Fokina, who reached the final in Monte-Carlo earlier this year, came from two sets to one down to beat Fucsovics 7-6 (3), 5-7, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (3) in four hours and eight minutes.
Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 39, will face Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan for a place in the last 16. Galan had scored a five set win over Australia’s Jordan Thompson earlier in the day.
The Spaniard, who reached the fourth round here in New York in his debut appearance in 2020 and has also been a Roland-Garros quarter-finalist, had defeated Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (6-3, 7-5, 6-3) in the first round.
