Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 31 seed, edged out Australian James Duckworth 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the US Open in New York on Tuesday night.

Cobolli, ranked No 31, will play the winner of the match between Belgian Zizou Bergs and Russian Pavel Kotov next.
