US Open: Carreño Busta stronger than Thiem
Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Dominic Thiem 7-5, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 on Monday and will face the winner of the match between Kazakh Alexander Bublik and Frenchman Hugo Gaston in the next round
Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, the No 12 seed, moved into the second round of the US Open by defeating Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem 7-5, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Monday.
“I think that it was not bad at all the whole match”, said Thiem, 2020 champion, after the match. “Probably intensity-wise and shots-wise, the best since Paris. A lot of good things to take from this match.”
“I think everybody who thought that I was the favorite today was far away from reality. Pablo has a great season. He won Montreal. He’s a two-times semifinalist here. I’m just still in the process of coming back.”
Carreno Busta, ranked No 15, will play the winner of the match between Kazakh Alexander Bublik and Frenchman Hugo Gaston next.
