Cincinnati champion Borna Coric suffered a surprise 6-4, 7-6 (10), 6-1 defeat by American Jenson Brooksby in the second round of the US Open on Thursday.
The No 25 seed, considered one of the outside bets for the title, had his chances in the second with seven set points, but went down in three to world No 43, who will now play either No 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz or Argentinian Federico Coria next.
The 21-year-old American benefited from the abandonment of Serb Dusan Lajovic (6-2, 6-0, 3-0) in the first round. Coric, ranked No 29, won against French qualifier Enzo Couacaud (6-2, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 4-6, 7-5).
