US Open: 30th seed Arnaldi rolls into third round for second year running

Italian Matteo Arnaldi, the No 30 seed, defeated Russian Roman Safiullin 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round of the US Open on Thursday.

Arnaldi, ranked No 30, will play Australian Jordan Thompson after he defeated Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 7 seed, next. This is the second year in a row that the Italian has reached at least the third round in New York, after making the last 16 in 2023.

Arnaldi won against American wildcard Zachary Svajda (6-3, 6-2, 6-1) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of the US Open, Safiullin, ranked No 57, won against American wildcard Matthew Forbes (6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-2).
