Alcaraz closed the door on time on Coria to reach third round

Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the No 3 seed, beat Argentinian Federico Coria 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 to move into the third round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Thursday.

Alcaraz, ranked No 4, will play American Jenson Brooksby next. On Thursday, he nearly let the third set slip despite being up 6-2, 6-1, 4-1 but Alcaraz recovered just in time, saving four break points at 4-4 before converting his first match point at 6-5 on Coria’s serve.

“I enjoyed playing today,” he said. “Of course I trying not to think about the pressure, not to think about the results, and of course the ranking. Just trying to be myself on court, trying to, as you say, show my best level. I think I am getting better every day that I am playing here in US Open.

“So I just enjoy and show my best level in the next rounds.”

The 19-year-old Spaniard benefited from the retirement of Argentinian Sebastian Baez (7-5, 7-5, 2-0) in the previous round under scorching and humid conditions. Coria, ranked No 78, beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (7-5, 6-4, 6-3) to get to Alcaraz.
