Still not ready after ankle surgery, Alexander Zverev withdraws from the US Open
The German isn’t quite healed from the ankle injury he suffered at Roland-Garros this spring.
World No 2 Alexander Zverev has made his withdrawal from the 2022 US Open official. The tournament announced the news on Monday, ending speculation that the 2020 US Open finalist and Tokyo Olympic gold medallist might have returned from ankle surgery ahead of schedule.
Zverev’s withdrawal sends American Stefan Kozlov into the main draw.
Zverev, who injured his ankle during the second set of his semi-final with Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros, and had to be carted off the court, announced that he had undergone surgery on June 7 of this year.
Scheduled to play Davis Cup for Germany in mid-September
“To return to competition as quickly as possible, to ensure all the ligaments heal properly, and to reclaim full stability in my ankle, surgery was the best choice,” he wrote in Instagram. “My rehab starts now and I’ll do everything to come back stronger than ever!”
The 19-time ATP titlist has been back on court training for several weeks, and has recently signed on to play for Germany in the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals in Hamburg (September 13-18).
