Serena Williams to begin US Open swansong on Monday; Nadal to play on Tuesday
The bottom half of the women’s US Open draw and the top half of the men’s draw will begin action on Day 1 of the US Open
Serena Williams will kick off her final US Open campaign on Monday along with others in the bottom half of the women’s draw. Rafael Nadal along with others in the bottom half of the men’s draw will play on Tuesday.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, is expected to retire after the US Open after announcing earlier this month that she would hang up her racquets for good over the next few weeks.
The six-time US Open champion comes into the tournament with a 1-3 record in 2022 and will meet Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in the first round. Venus Williams, a two-time US Open champion and the elder sister of Serena, plays her first match on Tuesday
Nadal, the all-time men’s Grand Slam leader with 22 Majors, opens his campaign for a fifth title in New York against Australia’s Rinky Hijikata.
With 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic pulling out of the tournament on Thursday due to his unvaccinated status, Nadal has a chance to go further ahead in the race for all-time Majors in men’s tennis.
The Spaniard also has a chance to return to the No 1 spot after the US Open based on his performance over the next fortnight.
