“Not satisfied with my results, but I have to remember I’m 21 and top 15 in the world” – Rune
The Dane was knocked out in the first round of the US Open in straight sets by world No 50 Brandon Nakashima
Last year, Denmark’s Holger Rune entered the US Open ranked No 4 in the world and was ousted jb the first round. While his contemporaries Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have won Grand Slams since then and cemented their place as the leading superstars of their generations, Rune has slid down the ranks over the past 12 months.
He came into Flushing Meadows this year ranked No 15 and suffered a straight-sets first round loss on Tuesday to 50th-ranked Brandon Nakashima. The Dane, who parted ways with Patrick Mouratoglou as his coach, now has a 33-18 record for the season.

Holger Rune on his critics
On Wednesday, Rune took to social media to talk about the bumpy ride he has been experiencing but also tried to put things into perspective for those who are out to strike him off.
“Sometimes the bumps on the road are painful and frustrating. But we all know there are no easy or fast way to fulfil our dreams. Every experience is learning, that will make the foundation so strong that no one or nothing can break us in the end,’ Rune said in the post.
“A certain amount of darkness is needed to enjoy the daylight” – Rune
“I am not satisfied with my results, but still I have to remember I am 21, I am top 15 in the world, the highest ranked male ever in my county. So when media, “experts “and random (people) call me shit, I take it as a bizarre compliment. They are expecting more from me, and faster. I too love when everything moves in F1 speed towards the goal but life is not always like that.”
Rune ended his post asking all youngsters to continue to be strong in difficult times.
“To every young person or player out there losing in sports or feeling like a failure, be strong, it’s part of the road to success. A certain amount of darkness is needed to enjoy the daylight. #keepfighting #keepworking #keepbelieving”
