Monday at the US Open: Tsitsipas v Raonic under the lights on Armstrong – not Ashe
Stefanos Tsitsipas will face Milos Raonic in the first round on Monday evening at Louis Armstrong, before Caroline Wozniacki returns. Defending champion Iga Swiatek opens the program at Arthur Ashe stadium.
The first-round clash between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Milos Raonic won’t be taking place at Arthur Ashe stadium on Monday, but rather at a night session on Louis Armstrong. Spectators on that court will also be treated to the return to Grand Slam action of Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, a finalist here in 2009, who faces Tatiana Prozorova.
It’s a little surprising that the Tsitsipas-Raonic match won’t be played on the biggest court, but there are only four matches on Ashe – two during the day and two in the evening – and there are plenty of candidates.
Gauff and Tiafoe on Ashe
Iga Swiatek, defending champion and world No 1, will have the honour of opening the Arthur Ashe Stadium program at noon local time, followed by the USA’s No 2 and world No 10 Frances Tiafoe, semi-finalist here last year. Tiafoe’s presence – taking on compatriot Learner Tien – has even sent US No 1 Taylor Fritz to the Louis Armstrong Court.
In the evening, from 7pm, the home crowd’s great hope Coco Gauff is up against Laura Siegemund. Gauff arrives in New York as one of the favourites. Their match is followed by the man with 23 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic, against Alexandre Müller.
