Andy Roddick has confessed that he is still disappointed that he never won Wimbledon.
He reached three finals in SW19, losing to Roger Federer each time, in 2004, 2005 and 2009, and ended his singles career in 2012 on his 30th birthday.
And in an interview with GQ, the American, now almost 41, admits those defeats still sting.
“Had I won Wimbledon, I don’t think I would have one single regret,” he said. “I’m not disappointed I didn’t win ten slams. I’m disappointed I didn’t win Wimbledon. You can have seven of them. I just wanted one.”
Roddick’s sole Grand Slam title came in 2003, when he beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets in the final.
He also revealed that he threw away many of the trophies he won during his career, explaining: “I thought, I don’t really need these. Anyone who’s in our house kind of knows what I did.”
The US Open trophy, however, remains, albeit slightly hidden in his office. It fares better than the runner-up plate he got in 2006, which is used as a drinks tray.
