“I have no other choice”: Daniil Medvedev’s solution to US television tennis blackout
Daniil Medvedev understands the problems that tennis fans in the US are facing when it comes to television coverage
With tennis fans in the US struggling to watch the US Open on their television services, it’s no wonder that players themselves are having similar difficulties keeping up with what’s happening in Flushing Meadows.
Daniil Medvedev has a – let’s say – unorthodox solution to the problems he might have watching Tuesday’s quarter-finals: Frances Tiafoe v Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic v Taylor Fritz.
“I cannot watch it on TV anymore!” he said in his own post-match press conference.
“I don’t know if it’s legal or illegal, but I have to find a way because I cannot watch it on TV. I got Internet, probably this, how you call it, pirate websites, I watch tennis there. I have no other choice.
“But at the same time sometimes I do want to watch some series. Do I put it on the phone or not? I watched Djokovic with Djere until it was 2:30 and then I had to go to sleep.”
Medvedev: The energy of the New York crowd is amazing
Medvedev got through his fourth-match match with Alex de Minaur, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, and without having a row with anyone in the crowd. He was asked about what often seems to be a spiky relationship with the New York fans, and he dismissed the idea that he was at all unhappy with them.
“The energy of the crowd is amazing. What happens is let’s say you take out of context just my couple of interviews, even here these two weeks, people seem like, Oh, my God, he’s again have this fight with the crowd. It’s not true. My relationship this year is amazing with the crowd. It is as I say, sometimes it is maybe five, ten guys that try to throw you off between first and second serve. Today was not the case.
“In general the relationship has been great ever since 2019 final. In terms of the crowds, one of the best tournaments I play during the year. Really happy and excited always to come back here.”
