De Minaur, Tsitsipas confirm respective plans for mixed doubles at US Open
While participating at this week’s ATP 500 in Dubai, Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas confirmed their upcoming mixed doubles participation at the 2025 US Open.
The revamped mixed doubles format at the 2025 US Open is enticing singles stars to participate.
Count Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas among the players making plans to add an extra event to their schedule at the season’s fourth and final Grand Slam.
Both De Minaur and Tsitsipas confirmed those intentions during respective interviews at this week’s Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. De Minaur and fiancee Katie Boulter are expected to enter the field, while Tsitsipas will team up with girlfriend Paula Badosa.
“Ultimately, you’re going to have very different answers based on who you ask,” De Minaur said when asked about controversy over the format change, which will allow more singles players to take the court while potentially ousting more than a few doubles specialists.
The way it’s proposed now, it definitely entices a lot more of the singles players to play. it’s an opportunity.
“If I’m looking purely at myself and the situation I’m in, it does present an opportunity for me to play mixed doubles, which in previous years I probably wouldn’t have done,” the Aussie explained. “Just because as the format is right now for a singles player, you’re not really going to play mixed doubles because your priority is obviously the singles.
“The way it’s proposed now, it definitely entices a lot more of the singles players to play. It’s an opportunity. Me personally, I really enjoy playing mixed doubles, so I think it’s going to be fun to hopefully play some mixed with Katie, which will be exciting.
“It obviously isn’t the best situation for the doubles players, taking away their chance and opportunity to play these events. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how that first week turns out, then go from there.”
It affords Tsitsipas the same opportunity.
“We are planning to play,” the Greek said of himself and Badosa. “She’s the mixed doubles partner I would always play with. I don’t have any other options out there or any other female player that I would want to play mixed doubles with. She’s always under my consideration and always someone I would want to share the court with.”
The new-look mixed doubles competition will be played on Tuesday, Aug. 19 and Wednesday, Aug. 20 of US Open fan week. The field will consist of 16 pairings — eight pairings with direct entry based on their combined singles ranking and eight wild cards. All matches will be played in either Arthur Ashe Stadium or Louis Armstrong Stadium.
