Badosa withdraws from US Open, season over
Spain’s Paula Badosa announced that her season is over as she withdraws from the US Open ahead of her first round match against Venus Williams
Paula Badosa has announced her withdrawal from the US Open today, stating that she will be unable to compete due to an ongoing struggle with a back injury.
The Spaniard was scheduled to face Venus Williams in the first round, who will instead face a qualifier or a lucky loser now.
In announcing her withdrawal from the US Open, Badosa also confirmed that her season is over for 2023, as she focuses on rehabilitating from the injury she suffered at Wimbledon.
“After struggling for many months to compete again, I am ending my season,” Badosa wrote on her personal social media. “Those of you who know me know how much I like to compete and how difficult it has been to make this decision. We tried everything together with my team but the pain is not letting me move forward.”
“See you next year, stronger than ever.”
With Badosa missing all of the summer hard court season due to her back injury, this is a further setback for a player that as recently as April 2022 was ranked No 2 in the world.
