Australian Open champions Kyrgios, Kokkinakis kick off US Open campaign with three-set win
The close friends, who partnered to win the Australian Open men’s doubles title in January, will face Nishioka/Goransson in the second round of the US Open
Australian Open doubles champions Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis advanced to the second round of the US Open men’s doubles event with a three-set win over Lorenzo Musetti and Hugo Gaston.
The Australian duo, who had squared off in the first round of the singles draw – a match won by Kyrgios – came from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and two minutes on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
With the win, the Aussie duo improved to 16-3 for the season as a team, winning titles in Melbourne and Atlanta, and also reaching the semi-finals in Miami.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis, the No 8 seeds in the draw this fortnight, will next meet Yoshihito Nishioka/Andre Goransson in the second round.
Kyrgios is also still alive in the singles draw, where he will meet American J.J. Wolf in the third round on Friday evening.
