Roland-Garros: Zverev follows Nadal win with victory over Goffin to reach third round

Three days after his win over 14-time Roland-Garros champion Rafael Nadal on Court Philippe Chatrier, fourth seed Alexander Zverev was back in action at the French Open. This time against another veteran player – the 33-year-old Belgian David Goffin, who has been ranked in the top 10 in the past.

After a tight first set which he won in a tiebreak, Zverev had a smoother ride in the next two sets as he brushed aside Goffin 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-2 to move into the third round.

This was the German’s fourth win in six career meetings over Goffin, with all four of his wins coming on clay.

Zverev, ranked No 4, will play the winner of the match between Italian Luciano Darderi and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the No 26 seed, next.

Goffin, ranked No 115, had won against French wildcard Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3) during the first round of the Roland-Garros 2024.
