Roland-Garros: Vekic upsets 18th seed Kostyuk to reach third round

Croat Donna Vekic beat Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 18 seed, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the third round of Roland-Garros in Paris on Thursday.

Vekic, ranked No 40, was leading 5-0 in the first set before the Ukrainian fought back to level the set at 5-5. The Croatian managed to then win the next two games to win the set and then broke in the 10th game of the second set to win the match in one hour and 53 minutes.

She will face the winner of the match between American Danielle Collins, the No 11 seed, and Serb qualifier Olga Danilovic next.

This is the third time in 12 main draw appearances that Vekic has reached the round of 32 in Paris.

In the previous round, the Croat benefited from the abandonment of Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (6-5).

Kostyuk, ranked No 20, edged out Brazilian qualifier Laura Pigossi (7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4) in the previous round.
