Roland-Garros: Andreescu knocked out by Tsurenko as Ukrainian’s fine run continues
Lesia Tsurenko defeated Bianca Andreescu 6-1, 6-1. She’ll play Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, in the next round
Lesia Tsurenko advanced to the last 16 of Roland-Garros, ending Canadian Bianca Andreescu’s mini renaissance by defeating the former US Open champion 6-1, 6-1.
Tsurenko is enjoying a fine run in the French capital, but will face the mammoth task of beating world No. 1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek in the next round.
It will be a tall order, but the Ukrainian can take heart from the fact that she has already knocked out a former Roland-Garros champion in Barbora Krejcikova, whom she beat in the opening round.
Andreescu, meanwhile, edged out Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 18 seed (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) and beat American wildcard Emma Navarro (6-1, 6-4) earlier in the tournament in what looked to be promising form.
The Canadian will now turn her attention to the grass-court season as she continues to search for the tennis that gave her a Grand Slam title in New York.
