Former world No 3 Dominic Thiem advanced to the second round of qualifying for Roland-Garros after a three-set win over Italy’s Franco Agamenone.

The Austrian, a two-time runner-up at the French Open, has announced he will be retiring at the end of the season. He was denied a wildcard into the main draw, which has forced him to play the qualifying at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Playing on Court Suzanne Lenglen, the second biggest show court at Roland-Garros, Thiem came from one set down to beat 31-year-old Agamenone 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

He will next meet Finland’s Otto Virtanen, who beat Australia’s Dane Sweeny 6-2, 6-3 in another first round match.
