Roland-Garros: Swiatek sweeps aside Vondrousova to advance to last four
Iga Swiatek beat Marketa Vondrousova 6-0, 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon and will play American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, in the next round
Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros by defeating No 5 seed Marketa Vondrousova 6-0, 6-2 at Roland-Garros in Paris on Tuesday.
The world No 1 has never yet lost a set against Vondrousova, and she continued that perfect record in this fourth encounter between the two.
She has now won 19 matches in a row at Roland-Garros, and this was her 70th match win at a Grand Slam since the start of 2020.
Swiatek, ranked No 1, will play American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, next – meeting each other at Roland-Garros for the third consecutive year.
In the previous rounds, the Pole won against French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean (6-1, 6-2), Japanese Naomi Osaka (7-6 (1), 1-6, 7-5), Marie Bouzkova (6-4, 6-2) and Russian Anastasia Potapova (6-0, 6-0).
Vondrousova: Swiatek is just better
Vondrousova, ranked No 6, won against Spaniard Rebeka Masarova (6-1, 6-3), American qualifier Katie Volynets (0-6, 6-1, 6-4), French wildcard Chloe Paquet (6-1, 6-3) and Serb qualifier Olga Danilovic (6-4, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
And knowing Swiatek’s almost inexorable form at Roland-Garros she was not dishearted speaking to the press afterwards.
“She’s just better,” she smiled. “So I think, you know, she was the better one today.”
