Sinner retires, sending Rublev through to French Open quarter-finals
Andrey Rublev benefited from the retirement of Jannik Sinner (1-6, 6-4, 2-0) on Monday afternoon and will play the winner of the next match between Croat Marin Čilić, the No 20 seed, and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed.
Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed, reached the French Open quarter-finals when Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 11 seed, retired at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris on Monday evening.
Rublev, ranked No 7, led 1-6, 6-4, 2-0 when the 12th-ranked Sinner called it quits. The Italian had a problem with his left knee that had already been bothering him in the previous round.
Rublev will face the winner of the next match between fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 2 seed, and Croatian veteran Marin Čilić, the No 20 seed.
Prior to Monday’s result, Rublev defeated Soon Woo Kwon (6-7 [5], 6-3, 6-2, 6-4), Argentinian Federico Delbonis (6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Chilean Cristian Garin (6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 [11]).
Earlier in the tournament, Sinnerwon against American qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo (6-3, 6-2, 6-3), Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3) and American Mackenzie McDonald (6-3, 7-6 [6], 6-3).
