Italian Jannik Sinner, the second seed, defeated French wildcard Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round of Roland-Garros at Roland-Garros in Paris on Wednesday evening.

Sinner withstood a physical first set, with Gasquet going toe-to-toe with the world No 2 for the better part of an hour in the opening stanza. When the Italian prevailed 6-4, Gasquet’s level dropped across the final two sets. Sinner also began mixing in more net play, capitalising on the Frenchman’s court position.

“I know you guys were cheering for Richard, but it has been a very, very fair crowd. Thank you so much for the support,” said Sinner after the match, before going on to congratulate Gasquet, who may well have just played his final Roland-Garros.

“He gave as a player, and still gives so much for tennis. It’s so nice to have him around, I wish him all the best for the rest of the season.”

Sinner, who is looking to win his second Grand Slam in 2024, shared that he’s feeling improvements on court compared to his round one match.

“For sure better than the first match,” he explained. “We keep practising, keep trying to improve every day. I’m looking forward to it (the next round), it’s a very special tournament for me. Hopefully I can show some good tennis.”

Sinner, ranked No 2, will face Russian Pavel Kotov next.

In the previous round of the Roland-Garros 2024, the 22-year-old Italian won against American Christopher Eubanks (6-3, 6-3, 6-4).

Gasquet, ranked No 124, beat Croat Borna Coric (7-6 (5), 7-6 (2), 6-4) in the previous round of the Roland-Garros 2024.
