Roland-Garros: Rybakina reaches last eight
Elena Rybakina defeated Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3 on Monday. She’ll face the winner of the match between Russian Elina Avanesyan and Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 12 seed, in the next round
Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 4 seed, defeated Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 15 seed, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last 8 of Roland-Garros at Roland-Garros in Paris on Monday.
This is her ninth quarter-final of the season so far – the most she has ever made in a calendar year, one more than the eight she achieved in 2023.
“Really happy with the performance,” Rybakina said on court afterwards. “Elina is a tough opponent…she is a great fighter and it’s always difficult matches against her.”
Rybakina, ranked No 4, will face Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 12 seed, next.
And refusing to be drawn too much on any speculation about winning the tournament, she said later: “For now I think I’m playing really good. As I was saying in previous press conference, I was struggling with sleep, some health issues. I think still in the past few weeks I lost a little bit physiques, lost a bit of weight. But more or less I’m confident and feeling great and happy that I was managing to finish the matches also in two sets.”
In the previous rounds, the Kazakh won against Belgian Greet Minnen (6-2, 6-3), Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus (6-3, 6-4) and Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 25 seed (6-4, 6-2).
Svitolina, ranked No 19, beat Karolina Pliskova (3-6, 6-4, 6-2), Frenchwoman Diane Parry (6-4, 7-6 (3)) and Romanian Ana Bogdan (7-5, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
