Roland-Garros: Two-time runner-up Ruud advances into second round

Norway’s Casper Ruud, the No 7 seed, began his campaign to reach a third successive Roland-Garros final with a straight sets win over Brazilian qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier.

As play was delayed on outside courts due to rain for more than five hours on a rainy day in Paris, Ruud had little trouble getting past Meligeni Alves 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to win his opening round in Paris for the seventh time in seven appearances.

This was Ruud’s 20th career win at the French Open. It was also his tour-leading 35th win of the season.

Ruud, who comes into the tournament after winning the Geneva Open over the weekend, will play the winner of the match between Monégasque qualifier Valentin Vacherot and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina next.
