Qualifier Ugo Carabelli wins first ever super tiebreak at French Open
Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli became the first man ever to win a deciding-set tiebreak at the French Open on Sunday
Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli made history at the French Open on Sunday as he won the first ever deciding-set tiebreak in the tournament’s history.
The world No 154 upset Russian Aslan Karatsev 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) at Stade Roland-Garros and will face Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime next.
All four Grand Slams are using the 10-point final-set tiebreak at 6-6 for the first time this year and it’s the first time the French Open has ever used the tiebreak to decide matches.
When the two men got to 6-6 in the fifth, Carabelli didn’t know what was going on.”
“No, I ask the referee when I won my game on serve, I asked him if it was 10 points, seven, I didn’t know nothing. I didn’t read nothing – a lot of mail about Roland-Garros, I didn’t read anything. But I like it. I thought it was a bit long, but no, I like it.”
Earlier in the tournament, the 22-year-old Argentinian won against Yuichi Sugita (6-4, 6-4), American Ernesto Escobedo (4-1 ret.) and Alexander Ritschard (7-6 [6], 6-2) in the qualifying event.
