French wildcard Diane Parry reached the second round of Roland-Garros by defeating Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 25 seed, 6-2, 6-3 at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris on Tuesday.

Parry, ranked No 79, will face Russian qualifier Mirra Andreeva next.

“I’m really happy with this win. It was a really good player and she was in confidence also with her final in Rome,” Parry said afterwards. “I [knew] it [would] be a tough match, but I’m really happy with my game today and how I played all the match.”

Kalinina joins the other seeds eliminated on the women’s side: Maria Sakkari (8), Petra Kvitova (10), Veronika Kudermetova (11), Belinda Bencic (12), Karolina Pliskova (16), Magda Linette (21), Martina Trevisan (26), Shuai Zhang (29), and Marie Bouzkova (32).

Krejcikova another early Roland-Garros casualty

Shockwaves were sent through the women’s draw in Paris, as Ukrainian world No. 66 Lesia Tsurenko advanced to the second round of Roland-Garros by defeating Czech Barbora Krejcikova, the 13th seed, 6-2, 6-4.

Krejcikova won both the doubles and singles titles in 2021, and had positioned herself as the player most likely to challenge to new Big Three of Rybakina, Sabalenka and Swiatek on the clay.

However, despite being the heavy underdog going into the match, it was a comfortable win for Tsurenko, who will play American Lauren Davis in the next round.

Andreescu comes through gripping Roland-Garros match

Canadian Bianca Andreescu reached the second round of Roland-Garros by edging out Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 18 seed, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Andreescu had to recover from a set down in what was a compelling battle between two former Grand Slam champions.

Andreescu, ranked No 42 for this year’s event, will face American wildcard Emma Navarro next.

Leading ladies win through on Roland-Garros day 3

Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff all came through their first round matches.

Swiatek overcame a difficult start to eventually breeze through her match against Spain’s Bucsa 6-4, 6-0.

Rybakina dispatched teenage Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova 6-4, 6-2 with a typically devastating display of serving and powerful shot-making.

Gauff suffered a big scare when dropping the first set of her match against Masarova, but recovered to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
