Roland-Garros: Ugly incident sees French wildcard almost disqualified

Austrian Sebastian Ofner rallied to beat French wildcard Terence Atmane 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2, 7-5 to move into the second round of Roland-Garros at Roland-Garros in Paris on Sunday evening.

Tensions boiled over in the fourth set, with Atmane frustrated at Ofner’s comeback. The French wildcard struck a ball in anger, which flew into the crowd and hit a spectator. Ofner protested that Atmane should be disqualified, but the umpire and supervisor disagreed.

Atmane was allowed to play on, but lost the final three sets of the match.

Ofner, ranked No 45, will face the winner of the match between Brazilian qualifier Gustavo Heide and Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 20 seed, next.
