Roland-Garros: Rome finalist Jarry upset by Moutet in first round

Frenchman Corentin Moutet moved into the second round of Roland-Garros by winning against Chilean Nicolas Jarry, the No 16 seed, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 at Roland-Garros in Paris on Sunday evening.

Jarry, who came to Paris off the back of a run to his maiden Masters 1000 final in Rome, was uncharacteristically poor on serve. While the Chilean had found great success on clay behind his serve this season, the shot let him down against Moutet.

The No 16 seed made 68 percent of first serves, winning just 60 percent of the points. On his second serve, he was vulnerable, prevailing just 37 percent of the time.

While Jarry was able to hit winners freely – accruing 49 across the match – errors also flowed from his side, with 32 forced and 51 unforced errors for the 28-year-old.

The match was played in front of a raucous Parisian crowd, with Moutet saying afterwards, “When you are French and you play against foreigners, we’re at home, and so the atmosphere is often alive.

“I think they did the job, and as a French player, it was a really great experience, a fantastic atmosphere, and I had a lot of fun.”

Moutet, ranked No 79, will play the winner of the match between Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko and Russian Aslan Karatsev next.
