Roland-Garros: Medvedev picks up first win of the season on clay to reach second round
Daniil Medvedev won against Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 and will face either Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis or Serb Laslo Djere in the second round
World No 2 Daniil Medvedev picked up his first win on clay this season with a straight-sets win over Argentine Facundo Bagnis in the first round of Roland-Garros in Paris on Tuesday.
Medvedev had undergone a hernia surgery in early April and had to skip the big lead up events into the French Open. He only returned last week in Geneva where he lost his opening match to Richard Gasquet.
On Tuesday, the Russian looked to be in cruise control as he took only one hour and 39 minutes to beat Bagnis 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
The Russian hit 12 aces in the first round match, winning 78 per cent of points on his first serve and 53 per cent of points on his second serve. He saved seven of nine break point chances on his serve while breaking his opponent five times (out of 13 chances).
The win sets up a second round showdown for Medvedev against either Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis or Serbia’s Laslo Djere.
The Russian, who will not be able to play at Wimbledon as things stand currently, has a chance to regain the world No 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic in the coming weeks.
