Roland-Garros: Bergs and Monteiro qualify for main draw, Wolf gets lucky loser
The Roland-Garros main draw is now complete, with 16 qualifiers securing their places
The 2024 Roland-Garros draw is now complete, with the final eight players qualifying for the main draw on Friday.
Headlining Friday’s results were Zizou Bergs and Thiago Monteiro, who both moved through the third round in style.
For Bergs, he had to get past a tough clash against French wildcard Mathias Bourgue. The Belgian prevailed 6-2, 7-6(4), and now makes his fourth-ever Grand Slam main draw. He’ll play the in-form Alejandro Tabilo, No 24 seed, in the first round. Win, and he’ll break through to the world’s top 100 for the first time.
Monteiro had a smoother ride in the final round of qualifying, seeing off Spaniard Daniel Rincon 6-4, 6-2 on Friday. Given his strong runs in Rome (beat Gael Monfils, Jordan Thompson and Miomir Kecmanovic en route to the round of 16) and Madrid (qualified, then defeated Dusan Lajovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas), Monteiro’s qualification is no surprise. First up, he’ll have a rematch with Kecmanovic in the first round.
American JJ Wolf was unable to move through qualifying on Friday, falling to Dutchman Jesper de Jong for the loss of just three games. It’s been a rough year for Wolf with injury, with wins few and far between. However, he still has a shot at Roland-Garros, claiming a lucky loser spot in the main draw. Unfortunately for him, he’ll face No 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz in the first round.
Others advancing to the main draw on the men’s side include:
- Netherland’s Jesper de Jong, who defeated JJ Wolf 6-1, 6-2 and is now 6-0 in Grand Slam qualifiers this year
- Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves, who beat Jaime Faria 6-4, 6-2 to qualify for the Roland-Garros main draw for the first time, having made the third round of qualifying here in 2021 and 2023
- Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin, who defeated Italian Francesco Maestrelli 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3 to make his first Grand Slam main draw in almost two years.
- Argentinian Roman Andres Burruchaga, who beat Serbian Jozef Kovalik 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4
- Austrian Filip Misolic, who beat Frenchman Quentin Halys 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to make his first Grand Slam main draw
- German Henri Squire who beat Italian Andrea Vavassori 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to follow up a maiden Challenger title this year
- Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic qualified for Roland-Garros following a 6-2, 6-2 win over Frenchman Geoffrey Blancaneaux on Thursday.
- Frenchman Gregoire Barrere, who defeated American Denis Kudla 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to secure a spot in the main draw of the French Open for the eighth time in his career.
- Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki, who beat Facundo Bagnis (6-4, 2-0 retd.) to qualify for his first French Open
- Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot, who defeated Briton Billy Harris 7-6(2), 7-5 to qualify for his first Grand Slam
- Brazil’s Gustavo Heide, who defeated Italian Matteo Gigante 6-3, 6-2 to qualify for his first Grand Slam
- Italian Mattia Bellucci, who overcame Spaniard Alejandro Moro Canas 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(10-7)
- Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who scored a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win against Swiss Alexander Ritschard
- Italy’s Giulio Zeppieri, who beat Finland’s Otto Virtanen 6-2, 6-2
Roland-Garros draw is now complete, with the exception of any lucky losers if players withdraw.
