Roland-Garros: Khachanov into third straight Slam quarter-final, beats Sonego in four
Karen Khachanov won against Lorenzo Sonego 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7), 6-1 on Sunday. He’ll face the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 3 seed, and Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas in the next round
Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 11 seed, won against Italian Lorenzo Sonego 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7), 6-1 to move into the last eight of Roland-Garros in Paris on Sunday.
It is his second Roland-Garros quarter-final, his third Slam quarter-final on the spin (he even played the semi-finals at the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Australian Open), and fifth overall.
Khachanov, ranked No 11, will face the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 3 seed, and Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas next.
Ahead of his victory, the Russian beat Frenchman Constant Lestienne (3-6, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3), qualifier Radu Albot (6-3, 6-4, 6-2) and Australian wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis (6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5)).
Sonego, ranked No 48, defeated American Ben Shelton, the No 30 seed (6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3), Frenchman Ugo Humbert (6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (3)) and Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed (5-7, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
